FAQ

Why VOIP?
Because it is cheaper and call quality is often as good!

What is VOIP?
VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) allows a voice conversation to be carried over the same line or connection used for accessing the internet.
Because the transfer of data over the internet is carried out in vast quantities at huge speeds, the "bits" (packets) making up the voice conversations can be carried easily, and since the cost of most internet connections are based upon bandwidth considerations, VOIP is carried for very little additional cost - if any.
So to call someone else on the same service as you have is like dialling an extension number in an office, and often costs nothing.
If your call is going to a telephone number on another network or in another country, the VOIP can be carried most of the distance to an internet centre nearest the physical location of the person you are calling, and then conventional telephony (cable or wireless) is used to deliver the call on the final leg of its journey.
The return journey is made in reverse to give you a two way telephone conversation. Because so much of the physical distance covered by the VOIP packets is via the internet (using Internet Protocol), call prices are lower than conventional telephony.

How good is the quality and will it replace my existing service?
The quality of Internet calls has improved dramatically and is now similar to Mobile phone call quality - which can cost up to 30 times more.
However, it is NOT recommended as a replacement for an exisiting landline service - but an additional service, with another phone number.
Remember that we have no control over the quality of - and contention ratio applying to - the internet connection that you are using.

Do I need a broadband Internet subscription?
Yes - VoIP is fundamentally based on digital voice communication via an Internet connection either through DSL or cable TV. VoIP is independent of the broadband provider, you're up for!

What is broadband and high speed Internet?
This type of Internet access offers speeds are usually much higher than the traditional modem solution. The laveres usually via DSL or cable TV and the speed is much more than the 64k. A speed of 256Kx128K is sufficient to ensure a very high voice quality.

Does VoIP also lived through broadband via satellite and wireless networks (FWA or WiFi)?
Yes - as long as the speed is constant over 64kb/s both directions. With FONET and your WiFi Laptop PC, PDA or Notebook, you can make and receive calls.

What is the demand for broadband speed and response times?
FONET using the latest technology and advanced standards in compression of speech. There are many factors associated with the transfer of information has been timed in real time. Delays, loss of data and bandwidth can affect the voice quality. Generally, this makes for a good voice quality when speed is constant over 64kb/si both directions. FONET offers various compression types (Codec), which restricts any further. temporary problems due to short-term consumption in the transfer of large amounts of data.

Do I need a fixed IP address (No NAT)?
No - the service will support devices operating in DCHP mode or with fixed IP addresses.

Can I use VoIP with my dial-up Internet?
Theoretically, it is possible, but we do not recommend it.

Where can I get the Softphone software?
